The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a stern response to what it describes as a deliberate disinformation campaign by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). The opposition party has dismissed claims circulating online, alleging that it plans to sack new recruits and personnel of state security services if elected into office in the upcoming December 7 elections.
In a press statement signed by its National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC labeled the allegations as “fabricated stories” and urged personnel of the security services and the general public to disregard them.
The party cited two examples of the alleged disinformation campaign. The first is a widely circulated memo falsely attributed to the NDC’s General Secretary, claiming that the party intends to cancel enlistments and dismiss new recruits in state security services if it assumes power in 2025. The second involves a flyer purportedly from a fake news outlet, “NEWSGH360,” with a claim that the NDC plans to conduct a forensic audit of security service appointments made since 2017.
“The said publications are totally fake and should be treated with utmost contempt. Neither the General Secretary nor the flagbearer of the NDC has made or issued the said false statements attributed to them,” the statement clarified.
The NDC also addressed the recirculation of a 2020 video in which the party’s National Communications Officer commented on voter registration-related violence in the Banda constituency. The party clarified that the remarks in the video were not directed at state security personnel but at individuals dressed in military uniforms who allegedly assaulted civilians during that period.
Reaffirming its respect for Ghana’s security agencies, the NDC emphasized its commitment to the welfare of “noble, professional, and patriotic” security personnel. “We have no intentions whatsoever to victimize any personnel of our revered security services,” the statement added.
The NDC accused the NPP of resorting to fake news as a campaign tactic out of desperation. It also called on the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service to investigate and prosecute those behind the false publications.
As the December 7 elections draw near, the NDC has urged the public and the media to remain vigilant against misinformation. The party assured Ghanaians of its commitment to fair and transparent governance, should it emerge victorious in the elections.
