President John Dramani Mahama, has announced a bold and ambitious plan to plant over 30 million trees across Ghana by 2030.
This initiative, officially launched on World Environment Day 2025 at Kwabenya Community Senior High School,in June 5, 2025, aims to combat the growing menace of plastic pollution while restoring degraded ecosystems.
The tree-planting exercise, themed, “One Child, One Tree – Act Now,” underscores the important role children and youth will play in shaping a greener future.
President Mahama, emphasized that planting trees is a critical step toward improving air quality, promoting biodiversity, and creating healthier communities across the nation.
Highlighting the environmental benefits, the President explained that trees help absorb harmful carbon emissions and reduce the impact of plastic waste by strengthening natural habitats.
This national effort is part of a broader government strategy to shift public attitudes toward sustainable living and environmental protection.
The government’s commitment to this cause is further demonstrated by recent policies such as the ban on Styrofoam packaging, which encourages the use of eco-friendly alternatives that complement the tree planting goals.
President Mahama urged all Ghanaians, especially the youth, to take ownership of the environment by actively participating in the tree planting exercise and adopting responsible waste management practices.
Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Murtala Mohammed, pledged unwavering support for clearing plastic waste and ensuring the success of the planting initiative.
He reiterated the ministry’s ongoing commitment to eliminating plastic pollution and restoring Ghana’s natural environment.
Through this large-scale tree planting initiative, Ghana is taking a decisive step toward a greener future, offering hope and practical solutions to the urgent environmental challenges facing the nation.
