Dr. Edward Omane-Boamah, has called for a combined effort to fight against the rising cases of Diabetes mellitus also known as High Blood Sugar in Ghana.
He lamented that, about 300,000 Ghanaians are presently suffering from diabetes, adding this number may rise to 700,000 by 2045, if action is not taken.
Diabetes, he said, is a dangerous disease which affects every organ and part of the human body leading to blindness, hypertension, kidney failure, constant infections, ulcers of the foot and legs which may eventually lead to amputation.
He, therefore, encouraged people to do regular medical checks to know their blood sugar levels since 6 out of 10 adults do not know, they have Diabetes mellitus.
As Christmas draws near, the former Minister of Communications under the ex-President John Mahama in a post circulated on Facebook on Saturday, advised people to “eat healthy foods including fruits and vegetables and avoid night eating”, and also, asked for a “moderate intake of alcohol and fizzy drinks”.
The medical doctor, was “glad HE John Mahama and his family chose to donate blood sugar checking equipment (Glucometers) to the Diabetes Centre of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Monday when he turned 63”
Dr Omane-Boamah sent out “Big thanks” to his senior colleagues, Dr Ernest Yorke (Pavlov), Head of Endocrinology, Dr Yacoba Atiase, Head of the Diabetes Centre and Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah, CEO of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for making the event possible, adding “Let’s all join hands to fight Diabetes mellitus”.
Below is what he wrote;
Dear friends,
Let’s join hands to fight against Diabetes mellitus (High Blood Sugar) in Ghana, because Diabetes is a dangerous disease which affects every organ and part of the human body.
Did you know about 300,000 Ghanaians suffer from diabetes?
Did you know this number may rise to 700,000 by 2045 if you and I don’t take action?
Did you know, 6 out of 10 adults do not know they have diabetes? Yes! So, please check your fasting blood sugar as my Christmas gift to you.
And Did you know Diabetes brings blindness, Hypertension, kidney failure, constant infections, ulcers of the foot and legs … which may eventually lead to amputation?
Dear friend, you and I can take action on Diabetes from today, in this Christmas month!
Increase physical activity and exercise as well.
Moderate your weight.
Eat healthy foods including fruits and vegetables and avoid night eating.
Also, moderate intake of alcohol and fizzy drinks.
This is why I’m glad HE John Mahama and his family chose to donate blood sugar checking equipment (Glucometers) to the Diabetes Centre of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Monday when he turned 63.
Let’s all join hands to fight Diabetes mellitus.
Big thanks to my senior colleagues, Dr. Ernest Yorke (Pavlov), Head of Endocrinology, Dr. Yacoba Atiase, Head of the Diabetes Centre and Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, CEO of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for receiving us.
Once again, check and know your blood sugar level because 6 out of 10 adults do not know they have Diabetes mellitus.
Dear friends, have a blessed and Diabetes-free Christmas month.
