The Electoral Commission (EC) has stressed that all the disputed parliamentary elections, can be resolved if security is guaranteed at the collation centres.
According to the EC, there is no issue with the declaration, except that their security is not guaranteed to make the declaration.
Making this assertion at an event organised by the Center For Democratic Development (CDD) in Accra on December 18, 2024, the Director for Training at the EC, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, indicated that all the political parties have the results and are very much aware of who has won what.
He said, there are both soft and hard copies of the results and there is no way any of the party agents, can say they don’t know what they recorded at the polling stations which was to be declared at the collation centers.
“Both parties told us they would know the results by 7 and 11pm, how come they are all fighting now”, he asked.
For him, this dispute should not be happening and he wonders why there seem to be an attempt to force candidates on constituents when the mandate of the people has been established.
His biggest fear, he revealed was the claim that the police, have told the EC, it cannot guarantee their safety.
“We are taking these issues lightly but it is not a joking matter .We should not allow a precedent to be established “, he
Dr Serebour Quaicoe’s comment followed a reaction from the National Coordinator for the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) Mr Albert Kofi Arhin, who wondered why election results and its collation have become a problem.
According to him, it didn’t use to be the case under the former chair of the EC, Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan.
It emerged from the press conference, however, that six deaths, were recorded in the just ended 2024 elections with 46 injuries and 24 acts of vandalism.
The Programme Manager for CDD, Nana Kwabena Aborampah Mensah , who addressed the press, gave the assurance that they would follow up to see how justice will be served for the affected people.
