Two pressure groups, calling themselves the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the United Revolutionary Front of Ghana (URFG) have warned the Electoral Commission (EC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to desist from alleged attempts to undermine the integrity of the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The groups, claimed to have closely monitored the recent voter registration exercise and have observed several irregularities, including the deployment of NPP party agents posing as EC officials, the registration of underage individuals, and the unauthorized transfer of voters to constituencies seen as NPP strongholds.
A joint statement issued and signed by the NRM and the URFG, raised concern, regarding the recent voter registration and voter transfer processes in certain constituencies and urged the EC to exercise caution and avoid actions that could potentially plunge the country into anarchy and disrupt the peace that Ghana has long enjoyed.
“We have noticed that the EC went ahead to transfer voters to some Constituencies creating confusion at the EC offices across the country,” the statement reads. “It has come to our notice, that NPP is targeting the Volta region, Upper East region, and Upper West region among others to transfer votes electronically to these regions during the 2024 general elections.” It stated.
It further stated that the NRM and URFG, closely monitored the month-long registration exercise and observed several alarming trends and it has been noted that a significant number of EC officials were allegedly partisan agents of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) disguised in EC uniforms.
Furthermore, the statement noted that reports indicate that underage individuals, including schoolchildren from Junior High School and Senior High School, were brought in to register in certain strongholds of the NPP.
It added that of particular concern is the EC’s decision to transfer voters immediately after the registration process, without first compiling a provisional register for all parties to review. This has resulted in confusion and raised suspicions at EC offices across the country.
It noted that the Movements, have received information suggesting that the NPP is targeting regions such as Volta, Upper East, and Upper West for electronic vote transfers during the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The NRM and URFG vehemently condemn these actions, warning both the EC and NPP against engaging in activities that could undermine Ghana’s security and lead to chaos.
The group believe that these actions are driven by a desire to protect ill-gotten gains and widespread corruption, which they claim have worsened the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
The statement also lambasts the NPP government, accusing it of mass corruption, high unemployment, and the deteriorating living conditions of Ghanaians, while the party’s leadership “live in lavish homes, with fleets of cars in their disposals.”
The NRM and URFG called on the government to ensure peaceful elections and refrain from any attempts to manipulate the electoral process and asserted that they are closely monitoring the situation and have members in various security agencies, including the Police and Army.
The group urged all opposition parties to unite to safeguard the democratic process and prevent any attempts to destroy the country.
The statement emphasized that it is time for Ghanaians to rise up and protect their nation from those who seek to exploit it rally the people to defend their country against oppression and reaffirm their belief that true power lies with the people.
The movements called for unity and perseverance in the struggle for a better Ghana, where the well-being of its citizens takes precedence over personal gain.
The statement concluded by sending a clear message to President Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia that their actions would not go unnoticed and called on all Ghanaians to join the fight for a free and prosperous nation.
