Wassa Esikuma: 10 dead in galamsey pit collapse

The entire community of Wassa Esikuma in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality in the Western region was thrown into a state of mourning as ten people lost their lives after a galamsey pit collapsed on them on Wednesday, November 24.

Seven others were also severely injured as they were plying their galamsey business in the pit.

Rescue teams made up of officials from NADMO, police and other security agencies were at the accident scene Thursday afternoon to remove the dead bodies and rescue those alive.

According to a resident of the community, Kwame Bukro an excavator was used in removing the dead bodies, supervised by the security,

NADMO Director of the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality Francis Abeiku Yanka expressed his condolence to the families of the victims.

He urged that mining be done in the right manner having in mind all safety protocols in order to avert any further disaster.

The dead bodies have been deposited at the morgue in Tarkwa while the injured are receiving treatment at the Apinto Government Hospital in Tarkwa.
