Tidal waves have once again wreaked havoc to some coastal communities in the Volta Region and Greater Accra Region, threatening their lives and livelihoods.
Affected communities in the Volta Region include Agavedzi, Akplabanya, Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutinu. This is about the fourth month after the towns were badly ravaged by a similar incident.
Some communities in the coastal town of Ada in the Greater Accra Region, have also been affected by the latest incident.
Some residents in the Volta region in particular, have reported about how the wave has eroded the shores of the affected communities.
Last year, when it happened, many senior government officials refused to visit the areas and commiserate with the victims who had lost their properties with their homes and workplaces submerged in saltwater for days.
On the latest situation, a resident of one of the communities Kumawu Wasty Sylvester, has taken to Facebook saying “it is obvious that government deliberately does not want to commit resources to the construction of the sea defense walls knowing very well it is the only solution to this perennial disaster.
“This is evident in how the minority caucus in Parliament had coerced the government to capture the sea defense project in the 2022 budget amidst incessant reportage on the state of devastations.
“No wonder a paltry Ghc10, 000,000 was allocated for a needless feasibility studies to be carried out on an ongoing project.
“I have always maintained that the money should be used to continue the stalled sea defense project. Government should stop hiding behind technicalities and take responsibility. Volta deserves better.
