The political tempo in the country since January this year, continues to rise over who would succeed President Akufo-Addo, as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when his second tenure comes to an end.
What started as rumours as to the potential candidates, is gradually gaining momentum, with billboards springing up across the country.
They are speculations that, the vice-president, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, will be seeking to replace his boss. If this is true, he is sure to come up against the Trades and Industry Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, who some party faithful are saying it is his time.
This speculation, as expected has pitted supporters of the two gentlemen going for each other’s jugular.
President Akufo-Addo, was compelled to admonish his appointees who wish to contest for the flagbearership of the party to quit to campaign or stay put.
Despite this admonishing, the issue of who to succeed him has remained a topical issue in the nation’s public space. The fire was further stoked as the party prepares for its annual delegates congress, which is scheduled for this weekend in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.
All this is aside the clamour for party executive positions, which is also scheduled to be held next year.
As a newspaper, we are worried that, a government which is less than one year in its second term and facing myriad of problems will rather concentrate on delivering on its mandate, rather than jostling for his best suited to succeed Akufo-Addo
It is a distraction that the country does not need for now. Every member of the party, especially those in position of authourity, such as ministers, should be thinking of how to contribute their quota in contributing to get the country out of the quagmire it currently finds itself.
It is said that politicians plan for the next election while statesmen plan for the next generation. Ghana needs statesmen at the present time.
