Just when many Ghanaians thought they had seen the end of not only Covid-19, but any pandemic, recent reports indicate a spike in cases coronavirus, as well as the country recording of its first cases of Monkeypox and Marburg.
Available data reveal that Ghana is recording 97 new infections of Covid-19 on average each day. Ghana, has also confirmed positive Monkeypox cases to be 18, from an initial number of five.
For the Marburg, it is reported that two Ghanaians from the southern Ashanti region tested positive for the extremely infectious virus. This was confirmed by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in a statement.
In the opinion of this newspaper, the rising cases of COVID-19 and the emergence of new viruses, in the country are alarming and the upward trend needs to be stopped.
In our opinion the total collapse of the Covid-19 protocols may be responsible for the recent hikes in the number of cases.
Majority of Ghanaians, have stopped wearing face masks in public places, markets, offices, schools, and religious houses. Also the conspiracy theories on the virus and the vaccine have not helped in getting many Ghanaians vaccinated.
The number of Ghanaians who are fully vaccinated sadly, is not encouraging. Ghana has given about 18.6Million doses. 7.19M million people have been fully vaccinated which is about 23.1 per cent of the population. This is abysmal compared to other countries.
Based on the available data, we urge the government to step up its effort to vaccinate Ghanaians and educate them on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine.
Consequently, we urge Ghanaians to still adhere to non-pharmaceutical methods like wearing face masks in public places, and the use of hand sanitizers. This will go a long way in reducing the number of infections.
