City authorities, have pulled down a billboard supposedly promoting LGBTQI activities on the Accra-Tema Motorway.
The Member of Parliament f(MP) or Ningo Prampram, Sam George, disclosed this in a Facebook post.
He said, the billboard was pulled down after a media engagement with city authorities.
Sam George and some of his colleagues MPs, including Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwaml Dafeamekpor MP For South Dayi Constituency, Volta Region, had issued a 24-hour ultimatum to authorities to pull down the billboard, which he described as illegal.
“Over the weekend, our attention was drawn to an illegality that flies in the face of the Constitution of Ghana – Articles 11 and 26 which talks about Ghana’s cultural sovereignty. We noticed that a billboard promoting the activities of the LGBTQ activities has been mounted along the motorway.”
“As sponsors of the bill before Parliament and as members of Parliament who represent the aspirations and will of Ghanaians, we have deemed it important to show up here today to register in the strongest way our displeasure, discomfort and abhorrence for this unholy, unculturable and untraditional advertisement that has been put up on this road,” the MP had said.
Sam George and eight other MPs are sponsoring an Anti- LGBTQI Bill on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights that prescribes that people of the same sex who engage in sexual activity could spend up to 10 years in jail.
Varying forms of support for the LGBTQ+ community will also be criminalised if the Bill, known as the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, is passed into law.
The bill is currently at the committee level in Parliament, where public hearings are being held by legislators.
Following this, a private legal practitioner, Osman Alhassan had said authorities will first of all have to know how the billboard which is located in Accra, purporting to be advertising homosexuality in Ghana, is connected to the LGBTQI community before any action is taken within the law.
“We are by this, calling on the Inspector General of Police Dr Akuffo Dampare to immediately, within the next twenty four hours, carry out the necessary security operations to ensure that this billboard, which is an affront to the 1992 Constitution is taken down in conjunction with the MCE for the area. Failure to take action, as citizens we will take action as enjoined by the Constitution to defend the Constitution,” he said while he and some lawmakers and anti-gay activist such as Moses Foh-Amoaning, visited the location of the billboard on Thursday June 9.
Speaking on this development on the First Take with Dzifa Bampoh on Thursday June 9, Mr Osman Alhassan said ” We need to know how any billboard is connected to that community before any activity is done according to the law.”
This comes after sponsors of the anti-LGBTQI bill in Parliament, led by Samuel Nartey George have given the Police 24 hours to pull down the billboard.
Sam George who is Ningo Prampram lawmaker said the billboard is an affront to the 1992 Constitution there if the Inspector General of Police fails to act , he and other citizens of this country will take action within the legal framework to destroy the bill board.
