The much anticipated national delegates congress of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to elect its presidential and parliamentary candidates to lead the 2024 electoral war against the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has come and gone, with some interesting outcomes.
After voting and counting, the former president John Dramani Mahama, who was the front runner in the presidential race, won a landslide victory.
Mr Mahama was contested by former Mayor of Kumasi Kojo Bonsu. Former Finance Minister Dr Kwabena withdrew from the race on Friday, May 12, just a day to the Election Day.
On the parliamentary primary, most of the incumbent Members of Parliament, were retained with just a few losing to new entrants.
In all the election was peaceful and it has once again projected the NDC, as a party, which is ready to wrestle power from the NPP.
Expectations from NDC, as the main opposition party, has been high, and this congress should serve as a bases to rally the rank and file of the party to victory come 2024.
The winners have to be magnanimous in victory, as this victory is meaningless, if the main election is not won. This was a family affair and so it is expected that, both the victors and losers, will come together for the victory of the party in 2024.
In the considered opinion of this newspaper, the hopes of millions of Ghanaians are that the NDC, will prove not just to be an alternate platform, but a very organized party ready to wrestle power from the NPP.
Even at the level of criticism or holding the governing party to account on governance issues, the opposition party barely barks, sometimes overshadows, without providing a clear alternative on how the issue which they criticise the ruling party for should be addressed.
That party will only be taken seriously when it shows that it is truly committed to actions that show it has changed. Otherwise, the projections so far by the party, will be considered mere rhetoric. And that will not be good enough as its readies for 2024.
