This year’s VIVO road campaign awareness, has been launched ahead of the festive season which is fast approaching.
Under the theme: STOP, THINK and DRIVE, the campaign is to educate drivers and caution them against reckless driving.
These reckless driving, include driving under the influence of drugs, overspending and wrongful overtaking, among others.
The campaign, will also see to the training of over 1000 drivers on defensive and responsible driving .
Speaking at the launch of the 2022 campaign, the Managing Director of VIVO Energy , Mr Kader Maiga, whose remarks was made on his behalf, expressed the need to work together with all stakeholders to reduce road traffic accident.
He said driving as a profession, requires a lot of patience in order to avoid getting involved in accidents which produces devastating effects.
Between January and September this year, there have been 5000 accidents with 2000 dying as a result.
As an energy company dedicated to transport safety, the MD indicated that they are committed to supporting govnement and other agencies to reduce this trend on the carnage on the roads.
“ We are happy to achieve this through partnership with the National Road Safety Authority being the statutory regulatory body for road safety in Ghana to lead and supervise the project to ensure it meets all standards and requirements. They will be supported by relevant stakeholders institutions including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authorty( DVLA) , the police MTTD and the various Transport Unions “, he noted.
Under this year’s programme, eye testing of drivers and the renewal of their licenses was done.
A director at the National Road Safety Authority , Mr Kwame Atuahene, who represented the Director General , Ing David Osafo, revealed that the Authority is going to introduce an APP which will help passengers know the status of a particular driver union when it comes to accidents.
He praised the VIVO Energy for delving into helping reducing the carnage on the road when it is not their core mandate and into business to make profit .
The Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Private Road Traffic Union ( GPRTU) , Mr Abass Imoro ,urged drivers to take advantage of the training.
He said, there is the need for the drivers to upgrade themselves since newthings are coming up everyday about vehicles.
