The stress of an election-year campaign and the pressure of forming a new government have forced Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to undergo further medical treatment abroad.

This is after initial care at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

A statement released by the Presidency on Sunday confirmed that the 73-year-old Vice President had fallen ill after work on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Details regarding the nature of the illness or the country where she will receive further treatment were not disclosed.

Many believe that the gruelling 2024 campaign leading to her party’s victory and the challenge of forming a government with her boss, John Mahama, is now taking a toll on the health of the nation’s first female Vice-Chancellor of a public university.

Following medical attention at UGMC, doctors recommended that she seek further specialised care outside the country.

Signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the statement assured the public of the government’s support and extended well wishes to the Vice President for a swift recovery.

“The Vice President, Her Excellency Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, received treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre on Saturday due to a sudden illness that occurred after work on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Based on expert medical opinion, she will be seeking further care abroad.

We wish the Vice President a speedy recovery,” the statement dated Sunday, March 30, 2025.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, the first female to hold the position in Ghana’s history, has been instrumental in several government initiatives, particularly in education and governance reforms.

As the nation waits in anticipation for updates on the health of the elderly professor, many send their prayers and well wishes for her speedy recovery.
