Over 500,000 Tramadol pills seized at Tema Port

Authorities at the Tema Port have seized a massive cache of high-dose Tramadol, hidden in shipments associated with freight operator Hayaq Logistics.

The interception is being described as one of the country’s most significant drug trafficking crackdowns in recent memory.

The discovery, made by officials from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Customs Division, involved two separate consignments of the opioid branded as KIMAKING. The shipments contained more than 500,000 tablets and capsules of the restricted painkiller.

According to investigators, the goods were deliberately misdeclared in an attempt to bypass scrutiny. Officials say this tactic reflects the increasing complexity and boldness of pharmaceutical smuggling operations exploiting Ghana’s busiest port.

“This seizure is yet another warning that we are strengthening our border control systems to clamp down on the unlawful importation of pharmaceuticals and other contraband,” a senior GRA official said. “Illegal trade in drugs like Tramadol undermines public health, finances criminal networks, and must be stopped at all costs.”

The intercepted cargo violated key provisions of Ghana’s Revenue Administration Act and the Customs Act. The goods were immediately detained, and an investigation was launched. Authorities have confirmed that legal action is pending against the individuals and businesses involved.

Tramadol, though used medically to treat severe pain, has become widely misused in Ghana, prompting its classification as a controlled substance. Its addictive properties and high potential for abuse have made it a drug of concern, particularly among youth and labourers. Because of this, its importation requires special permits and clearance from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), which the seized shipment lacked.

The incident has reignited debate about the effectiveness of existing port surveillance systems and the need for stricter enforcement measures.

As investigations continue, port officials say they are working to enhance their systems to better detect and disrupt the entry of restricted drugs and illegal goods.
