Two Justices of the Supreme Court, His Lordship Justice Clemence Jackson Honyenuga and Her Ladyship Justice Agnes Dordzie are part of the 12 members of the various hierarchy of the Association of Magistrates and Judges who retire this year.
Justice Clemence Honyenuga who retired last month September has been given six more months by the Chief Justice to finish his cases in court including the highly controversial case titled ‘The Republic vs Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni, Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Limited.’ Whilst Justice Agnes Dordies also bow after 35 years in active service.
The retirees include two Court of Appeal justices, four High Court justices and four District Court Magistrates who were all recognized with a citation at the 41st Annual Conference of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) in Accra on Wednesday.
Announcing their retirement from the bench this year, President of the AMJG, Justice Henry Anthony Kwofie said, “This year we have decided to increase the amount presented to the retiring judges and to make the amount graduated having regard to the wide disparity in the number of years served by the retiring judges.”
According to him, the AMJG has taken a view that “it is unfair for a judge who has worked for say thirty years and has paid dues to the Association for all that period to receive the same amount as another member who has worked for ten years we will also give the details of amount during discussions of the financial report.”
“We have also increased the amount paid to members in the event of bereavement,” Justice Anthony Kwofie who is also a Justice of the Court of Appeal noted.
