The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the Qatar Education Foundation, to support Ghana in establishing an Islamic Medical School in the Northern Region.
This initiative aims to expand access to medical education and enhance healthcare delivery in the northern parts of the country.
Mr Iddrisu explained that the proposed medical school would also serve as a teaching hospital for the University for Development Studies (UDS), providing critical infrastructure for both education and medical services.
He appealed for friendly, concessionary financing to enable the project, emphasizing the benefit it would bring to the local Muslim community and the broader population.
The Education Minister, made the appeal during a courtesy visit by the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Ghana, His Excellency Khalid Bin Jabor Al-Mesallam, in Accra on June 12, 2025.
Mr Iddrisu also highlighted the need to strengthen bilateral relations between Ghana and Qatar, focusing particularly on education.
He expressed Ghana’s desire to deepen institutional ties between the Ministries of Education of both countries, encouraging the exchange of knowledge, best practices, and investment in education.
In addition, the Minister noted plans to review the Islamic curriculum in basic schools across Ghana, starting from kindergarten, to promote the teaching of Arabic.
Looking ahead, Iddrisu expressed Ghana’s interest in participating in the upcoming global Education Conference scheduled for September 2025 in Geneva, where Ghana’s progress and priorities in education will be showcased on the international stage.
In response, Ambassador Al-Mesallam, reaffirmed Qatar’s strong interest in the discussions and its willingness to explore collaborative opportunities to support Ghana’s education sector.
This visit is part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen education-focused partnerships between Ghana and its international allies.
