Drivers threaten nationwide strike as TraffiTech-GH rollout begins November 1

Commercial transport operators have threatened to withdraw their vehicles from the roads nationwide from November 1, 2026, over the planned introduction of the TraffiTech-GH digital traffic enforcement system.

The operators, who say authorities have failed to address concerns over traders and hawkers occupying designated bus stops and pedestrian walkways, insist they will not comply with the rollout until the alleged obstructions are cleared.

National Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, David Agboado, said the government and police had focused on educating motorists about the new system without addressing the conditions under which commercial drivers operate.

Speaking to Citi News, he argued that enforcement must be applied comprehensively rather than targeting motorists while leaving other road users and traders occupying spaces designated for public transport.

“The bus stops that have been taken over by the traders, the hawkers and other things, have they dealt with that place also? Because the whole thing must be holistic, not pick and choose something,” he said.

Mr Agboado said the association had earlier given the government until October 20 to clear traders and hawkers from the streets but claimed no meaningful action had been taken.

He warned that commercial vehicles would not operate if the digital enforcement system commenced without their concerns being addressed.

“On November 1, when TraffiTech starts its operation, and a commercial vehicle has been caught in that manner, we the commercial operators, none of us is going to move our vehicle,” he said.

He said the planned withdrawal had been agreed upon by several transport associations, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA), Tiger and Cooperative.

Mr Agboado maintained that although authorities were ready to activate the system on November 1, commercial transport operators were equally prepared to suspend their services.

TraffiTech-GH, developed by the Ghana Police Service, is an automated traffic enforcement system designed to detect selected road traffic offences using cameras, sensors and speed-measurement devices.

The system, scheduled to begin operations on November 1, will capture offences including speeding and running red lights. The recorded evidence will be reviewed and validated before electronic notices of violation are issued to motorists.

The initiative is intended to strengthen enforcement of road traffic regulations and reduce road crashes, deaths and injuries.

However, Director of Research, Education and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), ACP Alexander Obeng, has said the system will complement existing manual traffic enforcement rather than replace it.
