This is one AFCON that Ghanaians are willing to erase from the memory. Ghana has been placed on the wall of shame map.
It is pertinent to recall that, the last time Ghana, won the African Cup of Nation was in 1982. That was the fourth time after 1963, 1965, 1978.
It is also important to recall that only eight countries took part in the competition, which was held in Libya. Ghana won after a penalty shootout with the host Libya.
Since then the performance of the senior national team, has been on a downward trend. Regrettably, the junior national teams, comprising, the Black Starlet, Black Satellite Black Meteors, which also used to win laurels and bring smiles on the faces of Ghanaians, have also joined the black stars in turning our days into nightmare.
For most football lovers, the performance of the Black Stars is not as painful as the loss to Comoros, to them, that is a cardinal sin.
This newspaper is appalled that everything went wrong. The performance was shambolic to the extent that, watching them play and you begin to ask yourself, whether, it is Ghana that you are watching, because we can’t be that bad.
In the considered opinion of this newspaper, what unfolded before our very eyes, where for the second time in the history of the competition, the Black Stars failed to make it past the Group Stages, Ghanaians deserve an apology and if possible some heads must roll from the people in charge of sports in this country.
This show of shame must not be swept under the carpet. We, however, wish to emphasize that, no probe should be instituted, as that will only waste of resources, because we all know what the problem is.
We strongly suggest that, if the country ever hopes of winning any laurels in the future, we need to invest massively in sports, right from the grassroots to the national level.
