Suzzy Adwoa Pinamang has successfully undergone a scheduled eye surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading eye care institutions. The medical procedure took place on June 2, 2025, and was described as a success.
The second-year student of Adventist Senior High School in Bantama in the Ashanti region was accidentally shot in the eye by a classmate.
This comes after doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi confirmed severe injuries to her eyes, advising urgent surgical operation.
According to an official update from Rafik Mahama, Special Aide to Ibrahim Mahama, Suzzy is now steadily recovering and has begun to regain her independence, including the ability to see unaided.
“I am pleased to announce that Suzzy Adwoa Pinamang successfully underwent her scheduled eye surgery… The operation was a success, and Suzzy is now on the path to full recovery,” Mr Mahama stated.
He expressed deep appreciation to the medical teams in both Ghana and the United Kingdom, with special mention of the staff at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
He also extended gratitude to several key individuals and institutions for their roles in supporting Suzzy’s journey, including the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa; the Ghana High Commission in London; outgoing British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson; Francis Asenso-Boakye; Suzzy’s family; Roger Pope Opticians in London; the media; and the general public.
Particular appreciation was reserved for businessman Ibrahim Mahama, whose financial support and intervention made the surgery possible.
“We are especially grateful to Mr Ibrahim Mahama, whose generosity and full support made this entire process possible for Suzzy,” the statement added.
The family and supporters continue to remain hopeful for Suzzy’s full recovery in the coming weeks.
Member of Parliament for the Bantama Constituency, in a Facebook post in April this year, revealed that the family of Suzzy Pinamang had requested that their ward be treated overseas, and he has initiated the necessary processes to that effect.
“Following an extensive medical assessment, doctors have confirmed that Suzzy has suffered severe damage to her eyes. The family has expressed a desire to seek advanced treatment for her abroad,” he said.
The female student suffered the gunshot wounds inflicted by a male colleague in class, who is alleged to have accidentally fired the weapon he took to class on Friday, April 4, 2025.
“I have been actively working with them to obtain the necessary travel documents, including her passport and visa. I have also engaged with the Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who has been incredibly responsive and has demonstrated a strong willingness to assist.
He has requested certain supporting documents from the hospital, which I am currently working to provide,” the MP added.
The legislator revealed this when he clarified speculations that he had failed to provide the necessary assistance to the young girl.
Mr Asenso Boakye insisted on regular check-ups on the girl’s family as he expedited the processes to have Suzzy access the necessary medical attention to restore her sight.
“Regrettably, a video has surfaced on social media featuring a woman making claims that no assistance has been rendered to Suzzy and her family by me. I have since spoken with Suzzy’s brother, Clement, who has been my primary point of contact throughout this process. He informed me that the woman in question is not known to the family and expressed his concern over the misleading nature of her statements,” he said.
He reiterated his commitment to supporting the student’s recovery.
“Our collective focus must remain on securing the best possible outcome for Suzzy, and I remain fully committed to supporting her and her family every step of the way,” he concluded.
