A member of the legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Abraham Amaliba has criticized the Member of Parliament (MP) for New Juabeng South, Michael Okyere Baafi for his comment that Assin North MP James Gyekye Quayson will go to jail.

Apart from Mr Okyere Baafi being ignorant, he is also making comments as though he is speaking with the judge, Amaliba said.

“If a matter is in court and you have a Member of Parliament who is supposed to know better making such comments then one can simply say that his comments are are borne out of ignorance. Such comments have the potential of making the public think that he is having conversations with the judge. When you listen to to him, he makes categorical statements and emphasizes that he is sure that the Member of Parliament will go to jail,” Mr Amaliba said on Hot Edition on 3FM Monday April 11.

Okyere Baafi had said said his party, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will win the Assin North by-election. Although the case involving Mr Gyekye Quayson is yet to be determined by the court, the Deputy Minister of Trade said he smells victory for his party because the people have received their share of the national cake through development.

“We will win the elections, I am telling you. The good news is that the seat is not an NDC seat, it is an NPP seat,” he told TV3’s Komla Kluste in an interview.

The Supreme Court set April 13 to rule on the injunction application filed by private citizen Michael Ankomah Nimfah to prevent Mr Quayson from performing parliamentary duties.

Michael Ankomah Nimfah on January 27, filed an interlocutory injunction against from performing his parliamentary duties after a high Court Judgment.

James Gyakye Quayson had his seat declared vacant by Cape Coast High Court following issue of dual citizenship in July 28, 2021.

The Supreme Court panel of seven presided over by Justice Jones Victor Dotse with Justice Agnes Dordzie, Justice Nene Amegatcher, Justice Mariama Owusu, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Justice Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Justice Yonni Kulendi fixed the date after hearing the parties.

Earlier the Apex court had dismissed a review of application blocking the hearing of the injunction filed by Michael Ankomah Nimfah.

Counsel for the MP led by Tsatsu Tsikata withdrew the motion on stay of proceedings afterwhich it was struck out by the court.
