The Mepe and other surrounding communities affected by the flood, yesterday received various relief items from business magnate, Ibrahim Mahama, following the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.
The items, included 20,000 bags of 5kg rice, 24,000 cans of Mackerel, 12,000 bottles of cooking oil, 400 packs of water and 1,000 pieces of student mattresses.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Engineers & Planners and Dzata Cement, personally sent the relief items to the victims of the dam spill.
At Mepe, Mr Mahama and his team, were welcomed with a durbar by the Chiefs, Queen mothers, the DCE, the MP’s representatives, NPP supporters and others.
The people in the affected communities, appeared united by their common predicament.
The durbar was held at GP JHS Park at Mepe. The items will be distributed across Central, South, North Tongu and Keta constituencies.
Mr Mahama’s donation is said to be the biggest support yet from an individual or any institution to the displaced people, some of whom are having to lodge in abandoned schools, tents, churches and mosques, because their homes have massively been taken over by flood water spilt out because the Akosombo Dam was in danger of collapse with many towns and villages at risk.
The industrial city of Tema, was at the risk of being wiped out by water, if the water had not been let out by the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the dam would have collapsed.
Presenting the items, Mr Mahama, said “the relief items are to commiserate with the people following the Dam spillage”.
He also promised to help brilliant, but needy students affected by the flood.
Receiving the items on behalf of the community, the DCE for North Tongu, Divine Osborn Fenu, thanked Mr Mahama and his team for the massive donation.
He said the donation has put more smiles on the faces of the people living in the affected communities.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on behalf of the MPs, thanked Mr Mahama and his team for his support for the affected communities and assured him, there would be equity in the distribution of the items to all the affected communities.
The Paramount Chief of Bator, Torgbega Patamia Dzekley VII, expressed gratitude to Mr Mahama for coming to their aid at this crucial time.
He said they were very excited about this massive donation from the business mogul, adding this would put smiles on the faces of those affected by the massive flooding.
The Dam spillage in Akosombo, came with its massive waters that quickly inundated communities around the dam stretching several kilometres.
It affected eight districts across three constituencies: North, Central and South Tongu.
The donation by the business magnate will be distributed to the three affected constituencies.
Mr Mahama is one of the biggest philanthropists in Ghana. He has a long history in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), often simplistically seen as charity or philanthropy.
Through his companies, Mr Mahama spends millions of dollars annually in Social and Environmental programs, and disaster reliefs in support of critical government health and educational programs at both the community and national levels.
Some of Mr Mahama’s companies are either into mining or trading heavy-duty mining equipment to companies in the industry and are also involved in other business interests.
He is the owner of Asutsuare Poultry Farm, one of the largest poultry establishments in Ghana.
Until recently, his company MBG, used to be the Man Diesel Dealer in Ghana.
The new addition to his businesses is Dzata Cement Limited and also Renault Trucks from France.
The dealership agreement with Renault Trucks was recently signed in France.
Dzata Cement Limited is the only Ghanaian-owned Cement Plant with a capacity of 2.6 million tons, and it is the biggest stand-alone plant in Ghana.
Dzata Cement, has been on the Ghanaian market for some time now.
It has provided employment opportunities for several thousands of Wholesalers and Retailers, across Ghana and the West African sub-region.
