Makafui Woanya, the New Patriotic Party Volta Regional Chairman, is being chided for failing to read the mood and expectations of his own people in the region to inform a press conference he held a few days ago.
According to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), “the people of the region were in high hope that the NPP Regional Chairman’s address will touch on the current ever-increasing prices of common consumables, goods and services in the region and the Country, as well as the draconian policies of an inept government which has resulted in the erosion of many citizens’ investments in mutual funds, bonds and other such investment portfolios”.
The NDC said in a statement issued over the weekend that “in reality, these are the crux of the crucial issues bothering the minds of the people in the Region, and not the unnecessary and annoying tribal sentiments and bigotry that are being inflamed by the NPP Regional Chairman.
The statement issued by the NDC’s Volta Regional Communication Officer, Sorkpa K. Agbleze, observed that “for the NPP Regional Chairman to say the NDC is pushing a tribal agenda in the Volta Region, is clearly an inverted pyramid of a piffle”.
The opposition party explained, “This is so because history and recent happenings confirm the general incontrovertible belief that the NPP is nothing but a group of tribal bigots whose survival in Ghana’s political space is to always play the tribal card at the least opportunity.
The NDC asked “is it not shameful that Mr. Woanya is one of those indigenes who are proud about the current state of the overhyped Keta Port, where evidently there is no work ongoing yet for all these years a CEO is receiving fat salaries at the expense of the poor taxpayer with only containers and a billboard to show for it?
It said that “it is obvious that Mr. Woanya, like many in that party, is highly uncomfortable and insecure about the massive attention and goodwill being enjoyed by the NDC, a party that is more than well positioned to not only recapture the Hohoe parliamentary seat but to also decisively win the 2024 General Elections. Clearly, the constant tribal incitement is nothing but the last straw meant to give them some semblance of relevance.
“The Regional Chairman’s praises and gloating over the current disgraceful state of the purported Keta Port clearly shows he does not in any way appreciate and respect the mood and expectations of the people of Keta. He is no doubt adding to the insult of the intelligence of his own people, the hallmark of the NPP communicators.
The statement said that “the people of the Region expect the Regional Chairman to talk about the promise made by the Finance Minister to commit some money towards the continuation of the Sea Defense Project along the Anlo, Keta and Ketu South lines to forestall the ravaging impact of the ever visiting tidal waves.
Mr. Agbleze, noted that “the people of the Region expect the Regional Chairman to touch on the most pressing issues affecting Anlo and Keta, where he comes from, such as the flooding of homes and farms by the Keta lagoon so as to improve the economic livelihood of the people within that enclave.
“I firmly call on the NPP Regional Chairman and the entire NPP to be empathetic and less heartless enough to speak to the promise made by their disappointing Finance Minister to allocate funds in the budget to address the issue of the tidal waves, the reason behind the high cost of goods and excruciating suffering in the Region.
“I therefore unreservedly and unashamedly reiterate the clarion call by the NDC General Secretary for the people of the Volta Region to see their belongingness to the NDC as a religion.
