The Ghana Police Service offered a GHC5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect, who shot several times into the air at the shopping centre on New Year’s Eve
The police have arrested Flight Sergeant Nicholas Owusu Frimpong for firing an AK-47 rifle several times into the air to welcome in the year 2022 at the A&C Mall in East Legon in Accra on New Year’s Eve.
The police note that it is an offence to discharge a firearm in public “without lawful and necessary occasion under Section 209 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29)”.
“The suspect … is currently detained by the military police whilst investigations continue,” said an official statement signed by Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, director of police public affairs.
The police have taken a serious stance against the actions of the young man since it is a crime to discharge a firearm in public without lawful and necessary occasion under Section 209 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29),” an earlier police statement said.
“The police administration, after reviewing the video footage, has placed an amount of five thousand Ghana cedis … as a bounty for anyone who can provide information leading to his arrest to face prosecution,” it said.
