NPP demands Muntaka’s resignation over cocaine seizures linked to Ghana

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the resignation of the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, over a series of reported drug seizures involving consignments allegedly linked to Ghana.

The party says repeated interceptions of suspected narcotics shipments, particularly cocaine, in other countries raise concerns about Ghana’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and secure its borders.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, November 4, the NPP’s Second Vice Chairman, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, said the Interior Minister should take responsibility for the situation.

He cited comments by Muntaka that some foreign security partners were reluctant to share sensitive intelligence with their Ghanaian counterparts over fears that information could be compromised by insiders.

Nana Boakye said the reported loss of confidence in Ghana’s security institutions raised questions about the minister’s continued stay in office.

“For the French seizure, I am still amazed why Muntaka is still at post. In fact, the Interior Minister himself, on TV, made it public that the French authorities are saying that they don’t have confidence in their Ghanaian counterparts so they are not going to share any information with them because they are of the belief that government officials are complicit in this matter,” he said.

“That alone is a vote of no confidence in Muntaka. That alone is a vote of no confidence in the leadership at NACOC and that alone is a vote of no confidence on the authorities at the Accra International Airport,” he added.

One of the incidents cited by the opposition was the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine by French customs authorities at the Port of Dunkirk in September 2026.

The shipment, estimated to have a street value of about €225 million, equivalent to approximately US$261 million, was discovered in a container declared as carrying plastic waste from Ghana.

French authorities reportedly intercepted the consignment on September 10, with subsequent investigations pointing to possible links to an international drug trafficking network.
