A State-owned GCB Bank on June 26, issued a statement in reaction to a publication by this newspaper in the 8th and 24th June 2022 editions.
Emmanuel Kojo Kwarteng, who signed the statement, described himself as the Corporate Affairs manager, failed in his duty to answer to the pertinent issues raised in those publications.
The haste with which the bank issued a statement, in which they wrote their own story and went ahead to discredit it, this, in the opinion of this newspaper, is sufficient proof that all is not well with that state owned bank.
The points and subsequent denials could have been made without throwing invectives and seeking to discredit, the newspaper, which to all intent and purposes, was doing a job of protecting a public entity, as well as the savings of ordinary, who by the way include pensioners..
As a newspaper, we do not go out of our way foraging for bad news to run down any state institution. We discharge our duty as the fourth estate of the ream by keeping authorities and institutions of sate accountable.
It is high time Ghanaians of goodwill denounce the attack on the media by institutions that feel, nothing should be written about them.
This newspaper is not above reproach, we will accept responsibility for any wrong reportage and apologize when necessary, but we detest statements as issued by GCB Bank that calls our professionalism into question.
Nowhere in the story did we say the bank had granted a loan to any company, if anything at all, we wrote that it was in the process.
What is happening at the state bank is serious enough and we call on the government to pay attention to what is happening at the bank.
In our view, the statement is an attempt to muzzle us, intimidate and frighten us off the job we have the professional right to carry out without let or hindrance.
