Accra-based Citi TV and Citi FM, have launched the 2024 edition of the Heritage Month at Tesano in Accra, to display the rich cultures, traditions and histories that define Ghana and its people.
The annual series of activities, spanning March 1, 2024, to March 31, 2024, will give Ghanaians several reasons to be proud of their culture and traditions centred on storytelling and this year’s Heritage Month, promises to be a captivating journey through the essence of Ghanaian heritage.
This year’s Heritage Month is on the theme “Imagine Ghana, Discover the Unknown,” which seeks to promote wearing Ghana clothes, and eating Ghanaian foods, as well as a tour of 13 regions across the country.
Speaking at the launch, the Managing Director of Citi TV and Citi FM, Samuel Attah-Mensah, underscored the importance for Ghanaians to preserve the country’s cultural heritage for future generations and emphasized the importance of learning from the stories of ancestors who have significantly contributed to shaping Ghana’s national identity.
According to him, Ghana’s cultural heritage is a vital component of the country’s national identity and it should be preserved at all costs adding that; Ghanaians must continue to celebrate their cultural heritage by maintaining their cultural values and social practices.
Mr Attah-Mensah, explained that the cultural heritage of Ghana, represents a rich blend of tradition and modernity, and it is evident in the country’s music, dance, drama, and other art forms.
He stated that, the preservation of this heritage would not only provide a sense of identity for Ghanaians, but would also serve as a tourist attraction and contribute positively to the country’s economy.
Mr Attah-Mensah, also stressed the importance of media platforms in promoting cultural awareness and understanding, saying; that through their programming and content, these platforms aim to create a space for Ghanaians to engage with their cultural roots and contribute to the ongoing conversation about the nation’s identity.
He disclosed that, throughout the month of March, there will be an itinerary of historical and culturally significant activities to project the Ghanaian heritage and urged Ghanaians to honour their elders and document their oral history, noting that such stories are invaluable to preserving the county’s cultural heritage.
Launching the programme, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman, expressed gratitude to Citi TV and FM, for the introduction of Heritage Month displaying the rich culture of Ghana and its contributions to advancing the domestic tourism agenda and showcasing Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.
He also highlighted the positive impact of the ‘Heritage Caravan’ initiative during Heritage Month, which allows people to explore Ghana and gain an understanding of the economic benefits that the country gains from tourism.
Mr Agyeman, expressed his delight with the successful See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana, and Feel Ghana campaign, launched in 2017, and attributed its accomplishments to the media’s extensive coverage noting that this media exposure has instilled a sense of pride among Ghanaians in their country’s offerings.
