Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s founding President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has died in Cairo, Egypt, following a prolonged illness, the Nkrumah family has announced.

Gamal, a journalist, writer and intellectual, reportedly suffered a stroke and had been receiving care at a rehabilitation centre before his death.

In a statement announcing his passing, the family said he died peacefully in Cairo but did not disclose his age or the date of his death.

The family described him as a committed advocate of justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity, noting that his work examined the political, social and cultural forces shaping Africa and the wider world.

It said Gamal maintained his independence of thought and developed his own reputation while upholding the values associated with his father’s legacy.

His death, the family said, was a loss to relatives, friends, colleagues and readers who valued his insights and contributions to public discourse.

The family also expressed gratitude to the medical professionals and caregivers who attended to him during his illness in Cairo, as well as the governments and people of Ghana and Egypt for their support.

It has requested privacy as it mourns his death and said details of memorial arrangements and opportunities to pay tribute to him would be announced in due course.

Gamal’s death marks a loss for the Nkrumah family and the wider journalistic community, where he was known for his writing and commentary on African affairs.
