The Abantu for Development, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), is demanding the return of the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection to Cabinet as a sign of goodwill for gender mainstreaming.
“Is it worrying how issues of gender have been thrown to the back burner by this particular administration led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo?” the NGO wondered.
According to Abantu, in six years the Gender Ministry has seen some four ministers.
Madam Gloria Kankam, a social justice activist at Abantu for Development and a member of the Affirmative Action Coalition for Africa made this demand in an interview on the Ghana Yensom morning show hosted by Odeyeeba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.
“We just cannot fathom why the ministry was removed from the Cabinet status,” she remarked.
“This is a blight on gender mainstreaming and activism in the country,” she said.
“We are also demanding that there should be no changes at the Gender Ministry just as some Ministries have been handled by men for the past six years,” she demanded further.
According to her, a long stay of a minister in a particular office builds the capacity of that minister.
She called on the government to take steps to pass the affirmative action bill bemoaning that Ghana lacks the political will to pass the bill.
