Parliament is set to replace its traditional attendance register with a biometric system that will require Members of Parliament to record their presence electronically during sittings.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin announced the planned rollout on Tuesday, November 3, as part of efforts to improve attendance monitoring and modernise the operations of the Parliamentary Service.

Under the new arrangement, MPs will be required to register their presence using designated biometric consoles, ending the practice of signing a physical attendance register.

Mr Bagbin said the system would provide accurate, reliable and verifiable records of MPs’ attendance and participation in parliamentary sittings.

Addressing the House, he said the upgrade was part of a broader programme to improve the efficiency, accuracy and effectiveness of parliamentary proceedings.

“Our Parliament must keep pace with the rapid advancement of technology and the growing demand for efficiency, transparency and accountability in the conduct of political business,” he said.

He added that the Parliamentary Service would roll out other administrative and technological upgrades during the meeting to strengthen the conduct of parliamentary business.
