The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has destroyed seized narcotic substances valued at more than US$10 million at Bundase, following a series of anti-drug operations.

The consignment included 4,730,100 synthetic opioid capsules and tablets valued at US$5.9 million, 338,000 bottles of codeine-based cough mixture worth US$4.2 million and 564.39 kilogrammes of cannabis with an estimated street value of US$112,878.

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) conducted verification tests to establish the nature of the substances before their destruction. The tests confirmed the presence of cannabis in the samples examined.

The exercise comes amid renewed concerns about Ghana’s role in international drug trafficking following the recent seizure of suspected narcotics in Lebanon involving a consignment linked to Ghana.

NACOC Director-General, Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to combating drug trafficking, saying the Lebanon incident should not be taken as evidence of institutional failure.

He acknowledged the challenges involved in tackling the narcotics trade but said the Commission would continue to strengthen its operations and disrupt the activities of traffickers.

The destruction exercise is intended to prevent the seized substances from re-entering circulation.
