An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been killed and another left critically injured after an explosion involving a motor tricycle transporting suspected dynamite at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, along an unauthorised route in the border community near Ghana’s boundary with Burkina Faso.
Security sources in Hamile said the explosion also killed the civilians transporting the suspected explosives on the tricycle.
The civilians were reportedly being pursued by security personnel after allegedly failing to stop at a checkpoint.
Initial accounts indicate that officers attempted to intercept the tricycle as it travelled along the unauthorised route. The occupants allegedly failed to comply with instructions to stop, resulting in a pursuit that ended in the explosion.
The blast killed one Immigration officer and left another with critical injuries.
The injured officer is said to be in serious condition, but details about the extent of the injuries and where the officer is receiving treatment were not immediately available.
Hamile is a border community in the Upper West Region where security agencies monitor cross-border movements as part of efforts to prevent security threats.
The incident has drawn attention to the movement of suspected explosive materials through unauthorised routes and the challenges security agencies face in monitoring such activities.
