Mahama rejects calls to fix roads before TraffiTech-GH rollout

President John Dramani Mahama has rejected calls for the government to fix Ghana’s roads and related infrastructure before implementing the TraffiTech-GH traffic enforcement system.

He said road safety measures must not be delayed until road conditions are perfect, stressing the need to curb speeding and protect vulnerable road users, particularly schoolchildren.

President Mahama made the remarks while in Antigua ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), following criticism of the system by some motorists and transport operators.

The Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) introduced TraffiTech-GH on November 1, using camera technology to detect traffic violations, with the initial phase targeting speeding.

Some motorists have argued that the government should first address poor road conditions and infrastructure gaps, including faulty traffic lights, inadequate road markings and missing speed-limit signs.

Some commercial transport operators have also threatened industrial action over the implementation.

But President Mahama dismissed the argument that road infrastructure must first be fully improved before automated traffic enforcement can begin.

“I hear they say we should fix the roads before we introduce TraffiTech. It does not work like that. I mean, the roads are not perfect in the UK, yet they have speed cameras,” he said.

He explained that the system was initially focused on speeding, with other traffic offences expected to be added later.

“TraffiTech has begun with checking speeding. They have not yet added the other components such as jumping red lights, wrong-way parking and others,” he said.

The system uses cameras to capture traffic violations and supports the issuance of electronic notices to vehicle owners. Police have said the initial deployment is focused on speeding offences.
