GACL earmarks GHC30m for first dividend payment to government since 2007

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has earmarked GHC30 million for payment to the Government of Ghana as dividends, marking the first time the company will make such a payment since its establishment in 2007.

The proposed payment was announced by the company’s Managing Director, Yvonne Afriyie Opare, at its 11th Annual General Meeting, where she presented management’s report on its operational and financial performance for the year ended December 31, 2025.

Mrs Opare said the amount had been set aside for the government, which owns 100 per cent of the company.

“GACL has earmarked an amount of 30 million Ghana cedis to pay to a hundred percent shareholder, the Government of Ghana, for the first time since the establishment of the company in 2007,” she said.

The proposed dividend comes as the company continues to face financial pressures from investments in airport infrastructure and the operation of regional airports that are yet to generate enough revenue to cover their costs.

Apart from managing the Kotoka International Airport, GACL is responsible for developing, maintaining and managing airport infrastructure across the country, including facilities in Kumasi, Tamale, Sunyani and Ho.

Mrs Opare said the company continued to finance much of the infrastructure development and related public services from its own resources, putting pressure on its liquidity.

“Domestic business operations and all other regional airports are not yet profitable,” she said.

Despite the financial constraints, GACL recorded growth in passenger traffic, aircraft movements and cargo volumes in 2025.

Passenger traffic increased by six per cent to 3.6 million, from 3.4 million in 2024, while aircraft movements rose by 2.2 per cent to 47,270.

Cargo volumes also increased by 4.8 per cent to 44,826 tonnes.

The growth in traffic was accompanied by an improvement in the company’s profit, which rose to GHC354.6 million in 2025 from approximately GHC336 million in the previous year.

However, the company continues to contend with financing costs linked to its infrastructure investments, particularly the loan facility used for the construction of Terminal 3 at Kotoka International Airport.

As part of efforts to ease its debt obligations, GACL secured approval to restructure and refinance its syndicated loan.

The revised arrangement extends the repayment period by eight years and provides a one-year moratorium on principal repayments.

The restructuring is expected to ease pressure on the company’s cash flow and provide room to meet its investment commitments while maintaining airport operations.
