The Herald has gotten clarification into the presence of the 79-year old baby mama of President Nana Akufo-Addo at Tuesday’s National Honours and Awards 2023, held at the Accra International Conference Centre.
It has been clarified that, Madam Virginia Hesse, was sent to the ceremony by her nephew, Thomas Svanikier alias “Tommy Svanikier” who was a Trustee of the Covid-19 Private Sector Fund.
Mr Svanikier, an Accra-based businessman, who is part of the individuals, institutions and partners, who distinguished themselves in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic,had sent his auntie to pick up the state awards on his behalf, because he was out of the country.
Senyo Hosi, also a trustee of the Covid-19 Private Sector Fund and a recipient of the awards, yesterday told The Herald, about Mr Svanikier’s enormous contribution towards the fight against the deadly virus.
“He contributed a seed fund for the trust and donated an ambulance and administrative vehicle for the GIDC, ” said Mr Hosi.
“He was instrumental in the project management design and contributed significantly to the fund raising of over $7.5 million used to fund the construction of Ghana’s first ever infectious diseases centre”, he disclosed to The Herald.
The centre was built in a record time of 67 days.
“He was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Volta at the recent National awards as one of the Trustees of the Fund responsible for conceptualizing and raising funding for the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre (GIDC) built to improve the medical diagnostic, and research capacity of the country with regard to infectious diseases, the facility was built due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The President, Nana Akufo-Addo, was seen handing over one of Ghana’s highest state awards; Order of the Volta – Companion to the lady who bore him his first daughter; a love child, while they were both students at the University of Ghana, Legon in the 1960s.
The award to the 79-year old Virginia Hesse, said to be a retired civil servant and Ghana’s ambassador to the Czech Republic led to various speculations with many questioning the rationale, but it has emerged, following The Herald’s publication that she rather took it on behalf of her nephew, “Tommy Svanikier” whom she had raised as her son.
For years, she had kept a low profile about herself and daughter whose name The Herald is still struggling to get.
But in 2017 at the age of 74, she was made a diplomat by President Akufo-Addo and dispatched to the Czech Republic from 2017 to 2021, as Ghana’s ambassador to the surprise of many members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
