Once again, we congratulate the former General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who took over from Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, as the new national chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the weekend in a fierce contest, elected its national executives at the 10th national delegates congress to steer the affairs of the party for the next four years.
The contest brought to the end, the election of officers from the branch, constituency, region and national level, who from the enthusiasm it generated shows are poised for victory come 2024.
A lot of bad blood was drawn. It was the first fiercely contested election party since its lost the 2016 election.
Now, that Asiedu Nketia, has taken over the reins of leadership of the opposition party, it will not be out of place to say that he has some very important tasks to perform. First on the list is the reconciliation of the political gladiators and warring factions from the branch to the national level.
Healing balm should be applied on the bruises and probably injuries suffered by all sides. Wounded egos should be massaged and grievances addressed by the new executives. Actors in this near-macabre dance should be called to a round table and reconciled.
Next to a coup, the worst threat to democracy is the absence of a coherent opposition. An opposition mired in deadly power struggle within itself is an immediate danger that needs to be tackled expeditiously
The officers of the party cannot afford to disappoint the NDC or, for that matter, Ghanaians who have reposed confidence in them to work to ensure a resounding victory for John Dramani Mahama, the presumptive flagbearer of the party.
It is our opinion that the executives the party has elected, must accept the urgency of the moment and apply themselves diligently to the task before them. There must be no room for in-fighting, backbiting, bickering, grandstanding or shadow- boxing.
Since 2024 is just two years away, it would do the new NDC leadership a lot of good if it could get its house in order and get its acts right.
