NDC rejects calls for Muntaka, NACOC officials to resign over drug seizures

The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected calls by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed and senior officials of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to resign over recent drug seizures involving consignments allegedly linked to Ghana.

NDC Deputy Communications Officer Julius Kwame Anthony said the government had no plans to remove the officials, arguing that their leadership had strengthened the country’s capacity to fight illicit drug trafficking.

Speaking on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, he said the interception of suspected drug consignments did not necessarily indicate a failure by security agencies.

“So nobody is going anywhere. We are focused on delivering for the Ghanaian people,” he said.

Mr Anthony also defended NACOC’s leadership under Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, crediting him and the Interior Minister with expanding the commission’s operational capacity and providing additional resources to combat drug trafficking.

“It is under his leadership that Narcotics is seeing the expansion that I spoke about earlier. It is under his leadership that we have acquired body and baggage scanners for purposes of ensuring that we do not have a free-for-all situation as we had in the past,” he said.

The NPP has questioned the effectiveness of Ghana’s anti-drug trafficking measures following recent seizures involving consignments allegedly linked to the country.

The opposition has also raised concerns about the ability of security agencies to prevent illicit substances from passing through Ghana’s borders.

However, Mr Anthony argued that controlled delivery operations are recognised methods in international drug investigations and should not be treated as evidence of institutional failure.

He accused the NPP of politicising the issue instead of considering the complexities involved in dismantling international drug trafficking networks.

“Unlike the NPP that is interested in politics, the rest of the world is interested in security and the fight against illicit drug trafficking,” he said.

The NDC maintained that the government would continue strengthening anti-narcotics operations rather than accede to the opposition’s demands for the officials to resign.
