About a month ago, the state broadcaster, the Ghana Television, carried a story about the death of the former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, GTV believed the story and carried it as a news item, without checking the facts.
The story according to information was picked from the internet but regrettably, despite the capacity of GBC to cross-check it fact as is expected in journalistic ethics, the state broadcaster, threw ethics to the dogs and published the hoax.
They have been several reports of the death of prominent people in our society and around the world, especially on social media.
Our late President, John Evans Atta Mills was rumored to have died many times, before that fateful day of July 28, 2008.
The wife of the former President, John Agyekum Kufuor was also said to have died some few years ago.
The former Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jake Otanka Obetsebi Lamptey was also reported dead, before his final passing so was late vice president, Aliu Mahama.
The Nigerian business mogul, Aliko Dangote, was reported to have died in a London hospital about a week, forcing him to come out with a statement to deny the rumor, saying he was hale hearty and well.
The people, who concocted the story and had many gullible people spreading the rumor, did not stop to think about, how such fabricated news could affect his business.
If it was only about the rumor, once he is alive`, he could always do what he did, by refuting the news, but he cannot control how the business community, would react after reading about it and his subsequent and in this case swift response.
Over the weekend, we woke up to another rumor, only this time around, it was about our football legend, Abedi Ayew Pele. He has also come out to deny the rumor, assuring the whole country and the world that, he is still alive.
We are supposed to use the social media to effect social change, promote businesses, socialize etc, instead we are using it for other purposes,
which includes pronouncing people dead before their time.
The dodgy websites engaged in such acts, must rather use their time and space to help society, make money and promote relationships, instead of these despicable rumors, that only goes to break hearts.
