There are elders and there are elders. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is not an elder. A real elder does not pursue a rat while his house is on fire.
I needed to get that out of the way before those who excuse bad behaviors accuse me of abusing an elder.
Growing up, I was indoctrinated not to like two groups in this country and that is the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
But in my adult life, I have learnt to soften my stance, because as they say, it is only a fool who does not change his mind. Circumstances and prevailing conditions sometimes dictate how one thinks or feel about something or someone.
Unfortunately although in 2000, I voted for then candidate John Agyekum Kufuor, because his demeanor and persona was what Ghana needed, I do not think, the current presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had that rallying force John Kufuor had in 2000 to deserve my vote and any well-meaning Ghanaian.
It is not in my place to remind Ghanaians that no one political party can govern forever that is the job of members of the NPP, but of course as a Ghanaian and a rational human being, I am always reminded of that simple fact of life in every democratic dispensation.
Dr. Mensa Otabil, the General Overseer of the International Christian Gospel Church (ICGC), was right when he said, one should always stay away from bad company. The name he felt short of mentioning is Nana Addo, he is a bad company and must be avoided at all times, his infinite desire to be President at all cost .
The current happenings in the NPP should be a course for concern, even for those who do not wish the party well. It is a precedence that could rear its ugly head in any of the other political parties, especially the National Democratic Congress, if all well-meaning democrats do not speak up and I for one, even though I do not wish Nana Addo well, I cannot shut up to what is happening to Chairman Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong, the General Secretary.
Everybody who knows Freddy Blay, the first Vice-Chairman, knows that he is hungry; his passion is driven by hunger of the stomach, not hunger for something that is in the general good of Ghanaians or his new found love (NPP). He left the Convention People’s Party (CPP), after betraying the party that was his claim to politics.
The man does not have anything, except the newspaper which was built by his wife; his law practice has been nothing good to write home about. I could pardon his treacherous attitude, because the man’s only hope of ever bouncing back in life is for Nana Addo to be President, so for him, he only needs to be asked to jump and he will ask, how high. He does not understand what principles means, the man has none left in his DNA, if he does, he will not be stabbing his Chairman and the General Secretary in the back.
The man who surprises me and never seems to learn although he claims to have cut his teeth in politics is Nana Addo. Even a fool knows that you do not win elections by dividing your ranks. A house divided cannot stand, they is unity in strength, the great leaders that we celebrate today, Mahtma Ghandi, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, etc, because they knew precisely when to draw the line between compromise and surrender.
In opposition, Nana Addo wants to behave like a King, a dictator, he wants to lord over everybody and everything. The NPP was a very attractive party and recent events confirm that. The number and caliber of people who picked nomination forms to contest for the parliamentary primaries is enough testimony.
Nana Addo is digging his own grave for another humiliating defeat in 2016 and then he will hold the country to ransom in another senseless lawsuit.
Why must the NPP and the country burn before his unbridled ambitions can be met, how many people must suffer insults and humiliation in his quest to become President.
This country stands to gain a lot, if this man never becomes president, his bitterness and vindictive attitude can set this country ablaze. If he is able to without batting an eyelid look on whiles members of his party are dragged on the ground, I wonder what his opponents will go through should he, God forbid, becomes President.
As an opposition leader since he made his first attempt at the Presidency in 2008, this country has not benefited from him, except further deepening the suspicion among people about the divisions in his party.
After losing twice in elections that political watchers had predicted that he was going to win, I will think that introspection is needed in moving forward. But no, the man is still the hothead that he once was, he is unforgiving and so is not able to see who wishes him well and who does not. He will spend his whole time as a President, chasing after his perceived enemies than working to better the lives of Ghanaians. With the help of a snitch like Freddy Blay, they are setting a course for another trouble in 2016. The NPP must be united so that the President, John Dramani Mahama, can beat them fair and square.
