The President, John Dramani Mahama, has finally spoken and put to rest the news making the round that he is supporting some candidates, in the run up to the December 20, National delegates’ congress, slated for Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region.
It is only natural that the President, who is a human being, will have preference in whoever chairs or run the affairs of the party that he leads, but in the spirit of fairness and competition, he is not suppose to take sides.
The delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have demonstrated over the years that the interest of the party comes first before any single individual, and this they have done by voting for individuals, who have steered the affairs of the party in times past and present.
We at The Herald do not think that, that time tested tradition is going to be thrown away because, of who supports who.
Those who do not have any message or have not lived up to expectation or have questionable records, as far as activities of the party are concern, are those who will go round and instead of telling the delegates the programme for the party, going into the 2016 election, will rather resort to either accusing some people of getting the support of the President or that they are getting endorsement from the President.
The President, like every follower of the party and well-meaning Ghanaian, will want the delegates to vote for individuals, who will make his work easy as the country prepares for the 2016 elections. As things stand now, the machinery of the party is not oiled enough to fight off unnecessary propaganda from the opposition.
The NDC, as a political party, do not have effective communication and so often, it is the government that has to slug it out with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), when it had to be party against party, the government can only be expected to come in to augment where the parties have fallen short.
In view of this, the party needs vibrant and energetic individuals, who will not sleep on the job, but will bring some dynamism and innovative way of doing things.
2016, will be different from 2012 and so the party needs a new approach.
