The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has presented state-of –the art outboard motors to the fisher folks of Tema New Town in the Tema West Constituency of the Grater Accra Region.
The outboard motors worth several thousands of Ghana Cedis, were presented to the fisher folks at a colourful ceremony held in Tema New Town.
According to the Assembly, the presentation of the fishing equipment and other accessories to the fisher folks, was to assist them during the lean season of the fishing industry.
The state-of-art outboard motors sold on the open market for Gh¢ 18, 500 was given to the fishermen in the area at the cost ofGHS 6,000.
The Assembly, which was last year adjudged the best metropolis in the 2015 District League Table (DLT), the league for assessing best performing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the country, said it’sworking to make lifebetter for the lots of the fisher folks in the area.
The Assembly said, it would spread the payment of the outboard motors over a period of time to make the payment terms flexible for the fisher folks.
Presenting the over forty “Yamaha” brand of outboard motors to the fishermen, Isaac Ashai-Odamtten, Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for TMA in the company of the former MCE and National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Mr. Kempes Ofosu ware, urged the beneficiaries to put the equipment to good use to enable them pay back in time.
He said by so doing, the Assembly, would be better placed to augment its stock and extend the assistance to more fisher folks in the Constituency.
He said, the presentation was in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda of “transforming Ghana and changing lives” ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
He said it was the dream of the Assembly to transform the lives of the fisher folks in the area during and after the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He urged the beneficiaries to pay their rebates promptly to enable the Assembly extent the exercise to benefit more fisher folks in the Constituency.
He assured the fisher folks that the Assembly will by the end of this year 2016; start the construction an ultra-modern hospital for the people of New Town area.
