The defeated aspiring National Women’s Organizer in the last national delegates congress of the opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP),Madam Tina Mensah, has joined the list of party stalwarts jostling to annex the party’s primary for the 2016 parliamentary elections for Weija-Gbawe Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
Madam Mensah, who was one time Deputy Organizer to the national Women Organizer of the party, Madam Otiko Djaba, is expected to battle it out with lawyer Egbert Faibile, the current Constituency Chairman for Weija –Gbawe, and the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for the Constituency, Madam Rose Abra (Mama Rose), as she is affectionately called.
Sources say, the MP, has relented on her decision to contest the 2016 parliamentary elections after she won the seat for the party in 2012, when the Electoral Commission (EC) divided the Constituency into two, thereby creating Anyaa- Sowutuom Constituency, which had Madam Ayorkor Botchwey ,as the sitting MP, also NPP MP.
When The Herald visited the area over the weekend, it got wind of the information widely circulating among some opinion leaders in the area.
According to them, the decision for Tina Mensah to join in the race is resonating among the youth.
Sources close to Madam Mensah told this paper that, she started series of meetings with some chiefs and leaders in the Constituency.
Madam Mensah is on record to have tormented her former boss (Otiko Djaba), during their elections to elect national officers in Tamale, the Northern regional capital.
In the run up to that election, the two ladies engaged in a banter on an Accra based radio station, Adom Fm, a station belonging to the stables of Multimedia Broadcasting limited, owned by Kwesi Twum.
During the course of that programme, the two party stalwarts, hurled insults and invectives at each other, all in the name of serving the party at the national level.
Some of the youth in the Constituency told The Herald that “Madam Mensah, is one of their own and people like her must be encouraged to liberate us”.
However, it is expected that the race for the primary, would be a tough one, as lawyer Faibile and Madam Mensah, are believed to be loyalists of the twice defeated NPP presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is also the party’s flag bearer for the 2016 elections.
The loyalty of the MP is not readily known, The Herald, gathered interacting with some party supporters in the Constituency.
As the NPP is putting its house in order, Madam Oboubia Darko, Deputy Executive Director of Free Zones Board, has kick start her campaign to appear on the ballot paper for the second time come 2016 parliamentary election on the ticket of the ruling National Democratic Congress(NDC), by providing sections of the community with some social amenities.
