The Future of GIJ: Your support matters


GIJ welcomes donations to support the building of an ultra modern digital media hub aimed at exposing students to the practical aspect of communication.

Speaking at the 60th anniversary celebration launch, Mr Modestus  Fosu, said “The 60th anniversary is all about the building of the digital media hub” said by The Hub would be equipped with digital media departments such as Research and E-library, as well as centres for digital audio-visual, online news and current affairs, graphics and adverts design, as well as digital print production.

The theme for this year’s celebration seeks to make “noise about our past achievements and our contributions to national development”.

The building of the digital media hub, will cost about 25million dollars. The proposed project would be situated at the school’s new site at Okponglo.

In view of this, the institute is calling on all philanthropists, industries, stakeholders, Alumnus, corporate organizations, individuals, NGOs etc to donate towards the building of the digital hub.

The institute initiated this project as part of the series of projects to be rolled out in celebrating the 60th anniversary this year. Other activities lined up includes health walk, seminars, exhibitions etc.

The main celebration which is slated to take place on October 1, 2019 is expected to launch the institute into another level of digitalized terrain.

The school also launched endowment fund to raise funds to maintain the structure and invest into other equally important areas. The endowment fund, will also look at the long term project.

The school’s rector, Mr Kwamena Aidoo, stated that the international digital media hub, would provide departments such as an E-library and Research, training, Digital Audio-Visual Centre, Online News and current affairs, among others as well as training.

The chairman of the 60th anniversary committee, Dr. Lawrencia Agyepong, also mentioned that the reason for the introduction of this practical experience is to marry  both the practical and theoretical aspect of the learning experience.

Dr. Agyepkng, also said so far, there has not been any donations towards the building of the digital media hub.

GIJ as an institution has been able to build great communicators. when you look withing the media fraternity, products of GIJ are scattered all over causing changes.

Other ongoing projects

The school is currently building a new lecture theatre at Okponglo to curb the problem of “insufficient space”.

The construction of the new site for the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) begun over ten years ago.

The new site is about 20 to 25 acres of land.

Background of the school

The school was opened on Monday, October 16, 1959, by the then Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Mr. Kofi Baako, to provide training in journalism towards “the development of a patriotic cadre of journalists to play an active role in the emancipation of the African continent”
