More often than not, we tend to use drugs that have not been prescribed by a doctor or a physician.
We consume the substance in quantities or with a method which is harmful to our system.
In this era, both male and female, abuse drugs, with statistics showing that 90percent of men take in steroids.
What Then Are Steroids?
Steroids, are synthetic or human-made variations of the male sex hormone testosterone. The right term for this compound is “anabolic-androgenic steroids”, where anabolic refers to the muscle building and androgenic refers to the increased male sex characteristics. Steroids can be prescribed by doctors to treat hormonal issues like delay in symptoms puberty, muscle loss such as cancer and AIDS.
However, steroids are being misused by bodybuilders and athletes in an attempt to boost performance or improve their physical appearance. In an era, where the bodybuilders want to show off their muscles, packs and how broad they have become, while athletes too want to hit the best run and hit the highest score, they misuse it by taking the steroids orally, injecting them into the muscles and applying it to the skin as a gel or cream to boost performance.
To every action, there is a positive and negative reaction. When steroids are misused, it causes some negative mental effects such as paranoid (extreme unreasonable) jealousy, extreme irritability, and aggression (roid rage) delusion thus false beliefs or ideas, impaired judgment and mania.
Not only does it cause a negative mental effect, but it also causes a long- term effect like; Kidney failure, Liver damage, tumors, enlarged heart, high blood pressure, decreased sperm count, development of breast in men, shrinking testicles in men and increase in the rate of prostate cancer.
Though steroids are often used by men, most women also use them and misuse it causing the growth of facial hair or excess body hair, decreased breast size, male -pattern baldness, changes in or stop in the menstrual cycle, enlarged clitoris and deepen the voice.
The severe form is getting addicted, once you get addicted to steroids it becomes very difficult to stop and sometimes, they experience some symptoms such as fatigue, restlessness, loss of appetite, sleep problems, decreased sex drive, steroids cravings and many others.
Anabolic steroids addiction can be treated through therapy and medication also an antidepressant medicine can help treat depression which is also a symptom of withdrawal.
It will advisable that instead of steroids, individuals cultivate the habit of exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet and taking prescribed drugs only for a healthy life.
