The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) in the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Isaac Ashai Odamtten, has declared his intension to vie for the presidency of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), the umbrella organization for local government authorities in the country.
“I am offering myself to be president of NALAG. I want to offer selfless and honest and leadership on the platform of participatory governance” were his words when he told journalists of his decision to contest.
Speaking to the media in Tema to confirm rumours making the rounds that he is eyeing the NALAG job, he said his vision for the Association, would be delivered through four thematic areas.
The MCE, who took the Tema Assembly to the top position in the 2015 District League Table (DLT), the league for assessing best performing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the country.
The position of presidency of NALAG is currently being held by Alhaji Mohammed K. Doku, who is also Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asunafo North Municipal Assembly.
But it is, however, not clear whether Alhaji Doku, will be seeking reelection in this year’s election
“I would seek to provide accountable and transparent governance where the voice of every member would be heard. Formulation and implementation of our programmes would be very transparent as we seek to expand our frontiers to bring about inclusiveness.”
He said, continuity would be a hallmark of his leadership.
“I would not abandon programmes initiated before me but would rather build upon them to achieve consistency and continuity in our activities and governance while leveraging on our sub -continent and global connections.”
Mr. Odamtten, said he would also seek to improve on the welfare of members.
“In fact, I would set up a taskforce to elicit ideas from members on how to improve on salaries, allowances and other forms of compensation in the first three months of my presidency.”
He called on members to vote for him in order to make NALAG a strong and resilient association.
“Together we would strengthen our governance structures and make them veritable vehicles to achieve the aims and objectives of the Association.
So far, Mr James Gunu of the Akatsi South District Assembly in the Volta Region, has also declared his intension to contest for the presidency.
