Mr. Stephen Akwetey, one of the leading contenders in the Greater Accra chairmanship race, has rolled out his flagship project, dubbed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Health/Education Fund last week at the Arts Center in Accra.
Addressing party foot soldiers, Mr. Akwetey posited that the idea of instituting such a very important fund, was borne out of his love and compassion for people, especially the brilliant but needy and deprived NDC youth, who for lack of financial support, had to abandon their education.
‘‘Am grateful for the opportunity to formally launch these all important but very timely social intervention schemes namely the Greater Accra NDC Education Fund and the Greater Accra NDC Health Fund aimed at bringing hope and relief to the less privileged within the fold of the great NDC in Greater Accra’’, he said.
Touching on the education component of the fund, Mr. Akwetey stated that education plays a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of every nation, hence his initiative to roll out the programme to help NDC youth from the deprived communities, who cannot afford the cost of education.
‘‘Many are the times when supporters and activists of the great NDC, have complained of lack of support as far as their education and that of their dependants are concerned. Education as you and I know, is the only tool to bridge the gap between social injustice. Education is the only tool capable of changing the circumstances of people from all walks of life and backgrounds’’, Mr. Akwetey said.
Mr. Akwetey explained further that the scheme would operate directly through the structures of the party and would have the 34 Constituencies being given equal quota to put forward intelligent, but less privileged students from the Senior Secondary level to tertiary levels.
According to him, unlike other education funds that takes an awful lot of time to access, his outfit will ensure that a lot of the bottle-necks are streamlined to quicken the processes involved in securing the funds within a short space of two weeks.
‘‘Bursaries will be processed within two weeks of application’’, he said.
Touching on the sustainability of the fund, Mr. Akwetey said that, ‘‘contributions from all over the globe will be pursued to ensure there is adequate funds at all times from this day to ensure as many as all, within, the Great National Democratic Congress gets some necessary support in this regard.’’
According to Mr. Akwetey, the health component of the fund is to augment the National Health Scheme (NHIS), this he said, would help reduce the pressure on the scheme.
‘‘The establishment of the Greater Accra Health fund is to simply add to the overwhelming efforts by the government to increase accessibility and affordability to health care delivery’’, he averred.
Mr. Akwetey, officially launched the fund with GH¢1 million seed money and further added that his outfit would solicit for funds from all the NDC MPs and other people who will be willing to donate to the fund, both from Ghana and overseas.
He made a passionate appeal to all NDC supporters to rally behind him to enable him sustain the project.
