A popular Ghanaian movie star, Madam Mary Afriyie Forson , also known as “Elgantus” in the movie industry, has noted that the struggle by most Ghanaian youth to acquire formal education to the highest level, was not necessarily the panacea to the high unemployment rate among them.
According to her, obtaining skills that will enable them to be self employed without relying on the central government to offer them job opportunities, is very crucial to the reduction of unemployment.
“I am not trying to say that it is not good for our youth to be educated, but too much focus on it to the neglect of skills training, is the bane to solving the unemployment problem”, she noted.
Madam Afriyie Forson, who is aspiring to become an Assembly member for Bremang East Electoral Area within the Kumasi Metropolis, in an interaction with the media to outline her vision for the area, stressed, “ Training the youth to acquire employable skills is critical to make them self reliance”.
The actress, revealed that when given the nod, her focus would be on how to equip the youth from the area with skills that would enable them to lead decent life styles.
She noted that there were quite a number of the youth, who do not have mental ability to broad their academic horizons, but when given the chance to acquire skills, they would be perfect in that trade.
She indicated that she would liaise with master craft men and other artisans in the area to train the unfortunate young ones, who could not further their education after Junior High School (JHS).
She said, having being in the movie industry for over fifteen years and acquainted herself with some key personalities, she would lobby them to ensure that the Electoral Area gets her fair share of the national cake.
She stressed, “It is sad that Nkontwima which is part of the Electoral Area, has no proper road linking the main high ways”.
“ This place though is only quarter of a mile to the main road, due to the deplorable nature of the roads no commercial cars are plying it and this has put the residents into some difficulties when they want to go to the main business district of the city, attention would equally be given to this challenge when I am elected’’, she added.
She was happy that a number of women, have availed themselves to contest in the upcoming local elections.
