An albatross is a burden; a burden that refuses to let you be and prevents you from doing something. When that ‘something’ is harmful, then an albatross can be quite beneficial, but on the other hand, when that ‘something’ is bad it becomes problematic and that is what we have with one of the Executives of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In the race for the General Secretary position of the NPP, there is one candidate, who has as his motto, VOTE FOR SIR JOHN AND SHAME ATUGUBA.
Justice William Atuguba, is a candidate and the Supreme Court is his political party for election 2016, at least that is Sir John’s logic.
Ladies and gentlemen, am certain you can now appreciate the context in which I employed the word albatross, to describe the General Secretary of the NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, alias Sir John, who is in the race to retain his position, competing with more capable and credible candidates.
If there is ever any politician in Ghana who fit the word ‘Tweeaa’, it is Sir John, he is so bereft of ideas that one begins to wonder how he came by his Law Degree and was called to the Bar and how he managed to convince the delegates of the NPP that he was the right man for the job of General Secretary.
How possible, can a lawyer lead his clients to court and instead of thinking of new ideas and strategies to win the case for them, he will rather decide to tell them the cases, he took to court and lost blames it on the Judge, who presided over the case.
There are always two outcomes in any human endeavor, you either win or lose, they are usually no middle lines.
The NPP lost the 2012 elections fair and square, but decided that it were rigged and so went to the Supreme Court to have some valid votes cast for President John Dramani Mahama annulled so that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, their flagbearer becomes the President of Ghana.
The status quo was maintained, as the nine eminent Judges, who heard the petition saw no merit in the petition brought before them. The petition lacked legal basis and the evidence was not good enough to give them what they were asking the court to do.
I think this called for new thinking and new ideas, about how best to go into the 2016 elections, but to still be blaming Justice William Atuguba for your loss is unacceptable and unpardonable.
What is worse is that the man had the guts and a mind of a toddler, to print posters with such description. His mind is that of a defeatist, who blames everybody for his loss, but himself or herself.
Sir John is a man that needs no introduction; recently he stirred the hornets’ nest by saying that Nana Akufo-Addo will lead the NPP for the 2016 elections, even if he is in a wheel chair.
Is he suggesting that Ghanaians owe so much to Nana Addo that we won’t mind having him as a President even in a wheel chair?
Politics is a serious business and must be left to serious people, who can steer the affairs of this nation. It is about the welfare of the people of this country, both current and the unborn generation, not about one individual.
Should Nana Addo in a wheel chair win the primaries of the NPP, the ultimate goal is for him to win the Presidential elections, if Sir John thinks less of himself and his party, Ghanaians deserve better than a President in a wheelchair.
This open declaration for one candidate is even against the Constitution of the NPP, an Executive of the party is not supposed to openly declare for any candidate vying for the flagbearership position of the party or any position at all in the party, yet he defied commonsense and rules of engagement
It is either Sir is oblivious of his own party’s Constitution or he has elected to ignore it. As a friend of mine always say, when it suits the Devil, he will quote the Bible, Sir John will condemn and criticize the Electoral Commission (EC) of colluding with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to rig the election, when the Commission is supposed to be neutral, yet when it comes to him to also be neutral as far as elections in his party is concern, he wants to flout the rules. You can’t expect people to play by the rules, when you don’t want to.
To many, Sir John is a pest and a nuisance deserving of neutralization. Many would wish he will be humiliated when the Delegates of the NPP assemble in Tamale, the capital of Northern Region in April to elect new National Executives.
I was livid when I saw a story on Peacefmonline.com which suggested that Sir John was in the lead in an online poll in the race for the General Secretary position of the party.
To think that Kwabena Agyepong is trailing him is something I cannot comprehend. This online poll is ridiculous. And must be dismissed with all the contempt it deserve.
This is a man (Sir John), who has come to establish himself as the nemesis of the NPP. If you ask me, I think the battle line has been drawn between Kwabena Agyepong and Yaw Buabeng Asamoah. Sir John and Nkrabea Effah Dartey are in the race to shore up the numbers.
So what makes Sir John so rambunctious and arrogant? Why does he speak and behave with such impunity; as if taunting and daring the rest of us and nobody is able to stand up to him.
The answer is as simple as A B C. the NPP is a one-legged party, with no leadership. If you doubt me just tell me the name of the Chairman of the party, it is Jake Otanka Obetsebi lamptey, who himself thinks, Sir John deserves to be retained.
