The Ashanti regional Manager for Road Safety Commission, Mr. Samuel Asiamah, has said that in other for political parties to secure their electoral fortunes in the upcoming general elections, they must ensure that accidents which claim the lives of majority of their supporters during elections, are reduced to the barest minimum by abiding by all the road safety codes.
The loss of many lives through fatal accidents, Mr. Asiamah noted, has always been a big blow to many political parties, as many of their supporters, who would have voted to push them to win political power die through road accidents.
Speaking to this paper in an interview during a day’s workshop for political parties organized by the commission under the theme;” Save a Live Save a Vote” Mr. Asiamah lamented over the death of 600 people, which occurred through road accidents during the 2012 general elections.
He noted that, the above mentioned misfortune, could have easily been avoided if executives of the various political parties, had ensured that they and their supporters were sensitized on the need to stick to all road safety code, before and after the heat of the election season.
He advised that, political parties should appoint responsible persons to drive and implement the code and that they must be appointed to ensure that issues relating to vehicle , transportation of supporters to rallies and campaign sites, the monitoring of drivers to ensure that they do not drink alcohol, whilst the rally is going on are complied with.
Vehicles, he said must be inspected prior to every journey and that insurance and roadworthy certificates and drivers’ license are valid.
