The man, who served ex-President, Jerry John Rawlings’ throughout the revolutionary era as a Prime Minister, Paul Victor Obeng, has died.
The Senior Presidential Adviser, who is also the Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) died on Saturday at a hospital, after he reportedly collapsed at the Agape Filling Station at Spintex Road.
His death comes weeks after he suffered a severe food poisoning after visiting a restaurant in Haatso Accra. He was rushed to the hospital by his family for treatment.
His wife popularly called, Auntie Rose, had found him almost lifeless in their bathroom in their Tema Community 2 residence, one evening after he had returned from town.
In the present instance, it is not yet clear the cause of his death, even though sources suspect he died of prolong asthmatic attack. He was said to have been rushed to the Lekma Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
PV Obeng, was crucial in the organisation of the just ended National Economic Forum (NEF).
Mr Obeng, served in the Rawlings’ administration and was a senior advisor to the late President, John Evans Atta Mills and continued in a similar role under current President, John Mahama.
He also served as the Board chairman of Kumasi Ashanti Kotoko Football Club and played some roles in the erstwhile John Agyekum Kufuor administration.
Until his reported death, he chaired the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) and was last Thursday acknowledged by President Mahama, as one of the people who played crucial roles in the just ended National Economic Forum at Senchi.
He was a Mechanical Engineer, politician and chairman of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology council.
A consummate politician with long years of service, Mr. Obeng was appointed in 2010, under President John Atta Mills administration as chairman of NDPC.
Mr. Obeng is the chief consultant and Chairman of OB Associates, a public, private sector consulting firm and chairman of Ghana Agro and Food Company (GAFCO).
P.V Obeng, was a product of Opoku Ware School in Kumasi and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he and Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, were mates and served on the University’s Student’s Representative Council (SRC).
He also served as Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) from 1992-1997.
In addition, he was serving as a director on the Board of Guinness Ghana Limited.
Meanwhile, government has released a statement announcing his death.
The statement signed by the Minister of Information and Media Relation, Mahama Ayariga said “it is with deep sorrow and profound regret that government announces the sudden death of Ing. Sir Paul Victor Obeng, the Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission and Senior Presidential Advisor”
Mr. Obeng, the statement continued “passed away this afternoon after being taken ill suddenly “
“Government extends its heart-felt condolences to his wife, children and family”, concluded the statement.
