It is becoming increasingly worrisome the extent to which people can go just to make money. These days more than 80 percent of honey sold in Accra is mixed with sugar.
It doesn’t matter, where you buy it, whether those hawking it, in the market, worse of it, are the ones sold in drug stores.
Some are properly labeled as organic honey, when in actual fact there are not. The Food and Drugs Authourity (FDA) has been mandated to by the public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) to regulate food, drugs, food supplements, herbal and homeopathic medicines, veterinary medicines, cosmetics, medical devices, household chemical substances, tobacco and tobacco products.
The objective of the Authority is to provide and enforce standards for the sale of food, herbal medicinal products, cosmetics, drugs, medical devices and household chemical substances.
We are compelled based on the happenings, to ask if the FDA, regulate the activities of producers of honey for commercial purposes.
If they do, we recommend that they should courageously investigate through their post market surveillance and recommend for prosecution the alleged criminals to serve as deterrent to other aberrant members of the public.
As these merchants continue to ride roughshod on the ignorance of the consuming public, what measures, exist for them to use to determine, which honey is wholesome and which is not. There should be more awareness so that people can know what signs to look out for if they believe a child is being groomed or abused
Not too long ago, some unscrupulous people were arrested for burning mattresses and mixing it with sugar to produce honey.
How far are people willing to go to make ends meet, only to put the lives of others at risk. We are a religious people, and yet the things we do, even make the devil, look good sometimes.
We are told by health professionals that, it is safe to consume honey, instead of white sugar, but if what we buy is more contaminated than sugar, then we are all at risk of contracting avoidable diseases.
Everybody needs to be vigilant.
